The Problem
About 47 million Americans are living with cardiometabolic diseases such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. These conditions often co-exist, increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality.
Unfortunately, the development and progression of these diseases is not yet completely understood. The Boudina Lab conducts translational research that contributes to this knowledge gap by studying the molecular mechanisms driving obesity, cardiometabolic disease, and cardiomyopathy with a special emphasis on mitochondrial energetics and autophagy.
Our Solution
to develop a deeper understanding of the development and progression of cardiometabolic diseases to identify advanced therapeutics to lessen the disease burden on millions of individuals and our society.

determining the biological mechanisms driving this sex-specific increase in cardiac mortality risk.
Mitochondrial Energetics and Cardiac Remodeling
determining the causative drivers and downstream consequences of the pathogenic HFpEF cascade.
Autophagy in Health and Disease
understand how p62 stabilizes Nrf2 and HIF-1a in the heart, as this information could be used to develop p62 mimetics for the treatment of ischemic heart disease.
Adipose Tissue Cellularity and Adipogenesis
understand the involve mechanisms of action, aiding in the understanding of adipose tissue expansion, providing therapeutic targets for obesity intervention.
