In 2006, she earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry & Cellular & Molecular Biology from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. As a doctoral student, she performed developmental and neurogenetic studies on the peptidergic nerve system in Drosophila. She was a Post-Doctoral fellow in North Carolina before relocating to Salt Lake City, where she performed genetic and molecular analysis of mutations preventing potential target mRNAs decay in Drosophila.
